Teacher grants are one of our favorite programs to fund. We provide a grant to each classroom that the teacher can spend on any supplies needed in the classroom.
The school district does provide a stipend for classroom supplies, but this is inevitably not enough to buy everything teachers really need and want. The federal government recognizes that teachers tend to spend their own money on their classrooms and offers an income tax deduction for up to $250 of classroom necessities. Even this is often a low estimate.
The Fall River PTO wants to help fill the gap. Some teachers use their yearly grant for classroom basics — extra pencils, posters, staplers, and manipulative teaching tools. Others make larger investments in classroom technology (contributing toward the purchase price of an iPad, for example).
